BARBADOS doing the double at the 19th Barbados International Judo Tournament & 3rd Carifta Championships
Barbados Judo Association hosted their MMX19 International Judo Championship and the 3rd Carifta Championship on Saturday December 7th, 2019 at the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium. The tournaments theme for this year was “LIVE IT! LOVE IT! JUDO”. The competitors contested keenly displaying a variety of techniques and skills. Both senior and junior Judokas demonstrated a passion and deep fighting spirit. The medal standing at the conclusion, Barbados was holding the first place trophy; sixteen golds, sixteen silvers and 16 bronzes. In second place was Martinique, with three golds and four silvers and two bronze, third place went to Curacao with one gold. The Ippon trophies were awarded to Ryoko Murray (Barbados) and Mariana Lascurain (Barbados).
Amongst the invited guest and patrons was His Excellency Teruhiko Shinada AMBASSADOR OF JAPAN, Mr. Vlad Marinsecu, representative of the International Judo Federation, Mrs. Sandra Osborne President of the Barbados Olympic Association and Mr. Cameron Burke Assistant General Secretary Barbados Olympic Association and chairman BIIG Games Organizing Committee.
During the opening ceremony His Excellency Teruhiko Shinada AMBASSADOR OF JAPAN TO BARBADOS presented the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays to the President of the Barbados Judo Association Professor Hoskins Caddle. Professor Caddle was also presented with an award from the International Judo Federation, a Herend Porcelain Statue of Jigoro Kano (Founder of Judo) for his contribution to the development of judo in Barbados, by Mr. Vlad Marinsecu.
Following the championships on Saturday, a Caribbean Judo Confederation Training Camp was held on Sunday 8th December. This camp was conducted by Professor Ian Weithers (Barbados). The Barbados Judo Association would like to thank all who assisted in making the event a success.
